The experience
The day starts with pickup from your hotel in Cusco, then a tourist bus carries you to Ollantaytambo train station. The train ride to Aguas Calientes takes 1 hour 45 minutes and passes through the Sacred Valley: fields of crops, livestock, mountains and snow-capped peaks visible from your seat. Once you arrive at Aguas Calientes, your guide is waiting at the station to walk you to the bus, which climbs for 30 minutes to the entrance of Machu Picchu.
The guided portion lasts approximately 2 hours 30 minutes. Your guide leads you through the main attractions of the Inca City (the temples, terraces and structures that make up the sanctuary) explaining what each section was built for and how the stonework holds together without mortar. After the guided tour ends, you have free time to take photographs and move through the ruins at your own pace.
The return journey reverses the route: bus down to Aguas Calientes, train back to Ollantaytambo, then a vehicle takes you back to Cusco. The guide is English, Spanish or Portuguese speaking, and the entry ticket covers circuit 1, 2 or 3 depending on availability. Children from age 4 are welcome on the tour.
