The minibus arrives at your hotel in Cusco before dawn. It's still dark when you climb in around 4am, and the city is mostly quiet—just the sound of the engine and the occasional dog. Ninety minutes later you're at Ollantaytambo station, where the train is already waiting. The 6:10am departure is the one that matters; everything else slots around it. You settle into your seat as the train pulls out, and then the Urubamba River appears below, and the mountains start to show themselves. For the next hour and a half, you're watching the Sacred Valley unfold—snow-capped peaks, cloud forest, the river cutting through it all. No rushing, no driving stress. Just the rhythm of the rails and the light changing on the rock.

Aguas Calientes arrives around 7:45am. From there it's a short bus ride up to Machu Picchu itself. Your guide meets you at the entrance—multilingual, and they've done this hundreds of times—and walks you through the citadel for two hours. Temple of the Three Windows, the Sun Gate, the agricultural terraces, the precision of the stonework. They point out things you'd miss alone: the way water channels still run, how the Incas built without mortar, why certain structures face certain directions. After that, you have free time until 1pm to wander on your own, sit with a view, take photos without someone talking. It's the breathing room that makes the day feel less like a checklist.

Lunch happens in Aguas Calientes—you pick a restaurant, eat at your own pace, then catch the afternoon train back to Ollantaytambo.
