The Experience

We were already bumping along the road out of Cusco before my brain really caught up — it was still pitch dark, and I could smell cold stone and eucalyptus when I opened the van window. The Sacred Valley just sort of appeared as the sun came up, all green folds and sleepy villages. Our guide, Rosa, handed around coca tea in battered thermoses and pointed out terraces on the hillsides. I remember thinking: how is this only the start? The train at Ollantaytambo felt like stepping into a moving postcard — glass roof, river flashing by, everything impossibly lush outside.

Aguas Calientes hit me with this weird mix of woodsmoke and frying eggs (I was starving by then). We met up with another staff member who walked us through the next steps — tickets, bus timing, all that. There was time to grab breakfast; I tried to order coffee in Spanish and got a smile from the woman at the counter who corrected my accent gently. The bus up to Machu Picchu itself zigzags so much you lose track of direction. It’s humid and quiet except for bursts of birdsong — or maybe that was just nerves.

Walking through the entrance with Rosa felt strange — like you’re trespassing somewhere sacred but also welcome? She stopped us right before one of those classic Machu Picchu viewpoints and just let us stand there for a minute. No talking. I still think about that silence sometimes; it’s rare you get that many people together and nobody says anything. The tour inside lasted about two hours, but honestly time gets weird there — stone feels warm under your hand even though it looks cold. Afterward we had free time; some folks went off to climb Wayna Picchu but I just wandered until my legs gave out.

The return felt quieter somehow. Lunch in Aguas Calientes tasted like relief (and maybe too much chili), then back on the train toward Ollantaytambo as clouds rolled over the peaks again. By the time we reached Cusco it was full dark, but my shoes were still dusty from Machu Picchu. Not sure any day trip can really fit all that in — but this one does its best.
