The Experience

We were already weaving through the narrow streets of Cusco when our guide, Rosa, started telling us about the “Golden Court”—Qorikancha. I remember the way her voice echoed a little in that cool stone corridor. The convent sits right on top of those old Inca walls—smooth as glass, somehow warmer than I expected. Rosa pointed out where gold once covered everything. I tried to imagine sunlight bouncing off all that metal. There was this faint scent of incense in the air from somewhere nearby, maybe a side chapel.

The drive up to Sacsayhuaman felt like climbing out of time. You get these flashes of city rooftops below—red tiles and laundry lines—and then suddenly you’re standing next to stones bigger than my car. Some were five meters tall, which is just wild to see up close. Rosa showed us how each block fits perfectly with its neighbor. She laughed when I tried to say “Sacsayhuaman” properly (I think I got closer by the end). The wind up there is sharp and clean; it carries voices from other groups but also moments of silence that feel heavy somehow.

After Sacsayhuaman we stopped at Q’enqo—a tangle of carved tunnels and open platforms where the Incas did their ceremonies. The rock was cold under my hand. Rosa explained about chicha rituals; I still can’t quite picture pouring corn beer into those channels but it makes sense here. Tambomachay was last—the water temple—where springs run through stone channels so clear you want to drink from them (don’t). It’s quieter out there, just water sounds and a few birds overhead. We lingered until the light shifted pink on the hillsides before heading back toward town. I keep thinking about those stones and that sudden hush at Tambomachay—you know?
