The Experience
“So that’s why the stones fit so tight,” our guide, Juan, said as he pressed his palm along the wall at Qorikancha. I’d seen photos but standing there—sunlight slanting through the open doorway, the scent of incense still clinging to the air—I felt this weird mix of awe and curiosity. The Spanish church built right on top of those perfect Inca walls… it’s hard not to feel the layers of history pressing in. Juan told us stories about gold sheets that used to cover everything. I tried to imagine it but mostly just stared at the way old and new collided in one place.
The drive up to Sacsayhuaman was quick—maybe twenty minutes?—but my ears popped a bit from the altitude. When we got out, you could hear kids laughing somewhere down below in Cusco and dogs barking (always dogs in Peru). Those massive stones at Sacsayhuaman look impossible, honestly. I ran my fingers along one—cold and rough—and tried to picture how anyone moved them up here. Juan joked about aliens but then explained the real engineering, which is probably more impressive anyway.
Q’enqo was next, all shadowy chambers carved into rock and cool air that smelled faintly of earth and moss. It felt quieter there, almost like you had to whisper. We ducked into an underground altar room where Juan paused for a second—he said some locals still bring offerings here during festivals. I liked that detail; makes these places feel alive instead of just ruins on a day trip from Cusco.
Puka Pukara came and went fast (it’s small), but Tambomachay surprised me—the water still runs clear through stone channels after centuries. Someone in our group splashed their face with it (not sure if you’re supposed to) and laughed at how cold it was. The ride back into town was sleepy; everyone just stared out at the hills or checked their phones for photos that never really capture how bright the sky feels up here.
