The Experience

“So that’s why the stones fit so tight,” our guide, Juan, said as he pressed his palm along the wall at Qorikancha. I’d seen photos but standing there—sunlight slanting through the open doorway, the scent of incense still clinging to the air—I felt this weird mix of awe and curiosity. The Spanish church built right on top of those perfect Inca walls… it’s hard not to feel the layers of history pressing in. Juan told us stories about gold sheets that used to cover everything. The drive up to Sacsayhuaman was quick—maybe twenty minutes?—but my ears popped a bit from the altitude.
