The Experience

We started right in the heart of Cusco—Plaza de Armas—where everything felt like it was happening at once. Pigeons flapping overhead, a couple of school kids weaving between tourists, and our guide, Maribel, waving us over with this big smile. She pointed out the cathedral first (I’d seen photos but it’s different when you’re standing there). The stone felt cold if you touched it. I tried to listen to Maribel’s story about the Spanish building over Inca foundations but got distracted by a street vendor selling something that smelled sweet and smoky at the same time. No idea what it was.

We moved through narrow streets—cobblestones underfoot—and then up to Qorikancha. The walls there are so precisely cut you can’t fit a fingernail between them. Maribel explained how this used to be covered in gold, and I caught myself picturing sunlight bouncing everywhere. She laughed when I asked how many times people ask her about hidden treasure (apparently every day). After that we climbed into a van for the short drive uphill to Sacsayhuaman. It’s only about 15 minutes from central Cusco but somehow feels like another world.

The air got thinner as we walked along those massive stones at Sacsayhuaman—honestly, I had to stop and catch my breath (altitude is no joke). You can see all of Cusco spread out below. There was this moment where everything just went quiet except for wind moving through eucalyptus trees behind us. We visited Qenqo next; Maribel showed us the zig-zag channels carved into rock and told us about rituals nobody fully understands now. Something about standing in a place where people puzzled over life and death centuries ago stuck with me.

Toward the end we stopped at Tambomachay—the water running through stone channels sounded peaceful after all the city noise earlier. I touched the water (cold!) and wondered if Inca rulers ever did the same thing here before heading back down to reality. Four hours went fast; I still think about that view from above Cusco sometimes.
