The Experience

How do you fit five archaeological sites and a cathedral into one morning without renting a car or piecing together separate tickets? This tour handles the route and the guide, leaving you to focus on what you're standing in front of. The morning starts with Sacsayhuaman, perched on a hill north of the city, where massive stones—some measuring up to 13 feet tall—are fitted so tightly together that a knife blade won't slide between them. The Incas carved designs of the condor, puma and snake into different stones, each representing one of the three Incan worlds. Your guide explains how the site functioned as a fortress while you walk the grounds and take in the view back over Cusco.

From there the coach moves to three smaller sites in quick succession: Qenqo, where you'll see the ancient temple of Puma and its sacrificial altar; Puca Pucara, military ruins built to defend the empire; and Tambomachay, where aqueducts, canals and waterfalls suggest the Incas may have built a spa resort for wealthy nobles. Each stop is brief enough to keep the day moving, but long enough to walk around and absorb the scale and precision of the construction. The guide narrates the history and the purpose of each place as you move through them.

The afternoon half returns to Cusco's center. You visit the Temple of the Sun (Qorikancha), built over by the Santo Domingo Convent after the Spanish conquest—legend says the original temple was completely gold-plated. Then comes the Plaza de Armas, Cusco's main square, where you tour the Cathedral with your guide. The building mixes late-Gothic and Baroque architecture, and inside you'll see Pintura Senor de los Temblores, the oldest surviving painting in Cusco. The tour ends with hotel drop-off, though note that some hotels sit in areas where vehicle access is restricted, so confirm your pickup location when you book.

Top questions

What exactly is Sacsayhuaman and why is it worth seeing?

Sacsayhuaman is a UNESCO World Heritage fortress built by the Incas on a hill overlooking Cusco, famous for its massive stone walls—some blocks reach 13 feet tall—fitted together so precisely that mortar was unnecessary. The site contains carvings of the condor, puma and snake, symbols of the three Incan worlds, and walking around it gives you a sense of both the engineering skill and the scale of Incan construction.

Do I need to buy tickets separately, or are they included?

You choose at checkout: one option includes admission to Sacsayhuaman, Qorikancha Temple and Cusco Cathedral; the other option does not include tickets, so you'd arrange and pay for them separately. Either way, your guide takes you through each site and explains its history.

How long is this tour and what time does it start?

The tour runs 3.5 hours total. Hotel pickup is included, so your guide will collect you from your accommodation; confirm your exact pickup location when you book, as some hotels sit in areas where vehicle access is restricted.

What's the difference between Qenqo, Puca Pucara and Tambomachay?

Qenqo holds the ancient temple of Puma and a sacrificial altar; Puca Pucara is a military site that once defended the empire; Tambomachay features aqueducts, canals and waterfalls, and may have been a spa resort for wealthy Incans. All three are smaller than Sacsayhuaman but show different aspects of Incan engineering and purpose.

Can I take photos inside the Cathedral?

Photography is forbidden inside Cusco Cathedral. You're also asked not to wear shorts when entering religious sites, so plan your clothing accordingly.

Is this tour suitable if I'm not very fit?

The tour is suitable for all physical fitness levels. Most of the day is spent walking around archaeological sites at a moderate pace, with the guide narrating as you move. You'll be on your feet for stretches, but the pace is set by the group and there's no strenuous climbing required.
