The Experience

Sacsayhuamán opens the day. The fortress sits on a hill above Cusco, built in the fifteenth century under Inca Pachacutec with stones extracted from nearby quarries and transported twenty kilometers by hand—a feat whose mechanics remain unexplained. The scale is immediate: massive blocks fitted without mortar, the engineering still visible in how they hold. From there the route drops into the city proper, moving through San Blas, the neighborhood where Inca nobility once lived and where cobbled streets now wind past artisan workshops and white-walled houses.

The Cathedral anchors the Main Square. Its construction began in 1560 using thousands of stones quarried from Sacsayhuamán itself—the Spanish literally dismantled the fortress to build their church. Inside, the walls carry works from the Cusqueña school, a fusion of seventeenth-century European devotional painting and indigenous Andean symbolism. La Merced Church follows, a baroque structure completed in 1671 after an earthquake destroyed an earlier version. The interior holds carved wooden ceilings, imposing altars and a gold Custody decorated with precious stones.

Coricancha, also called the Temple of the Sun, closes the sequence. The Spanish built Santo Domingo Convent directly on top of it after the conquest, so the two structures exist as layers—Inca foundation beneath colonial walls. A bilingual guide leads throughout, and hotel pickup is included. Entry tickets to the Cathedral, La Merced and Coricancha are covered; the Cusco Tourist Ticket (BTC) for Sacsayhuamán is purchased separately.
