itinerary

Step-by-step itinerary

Day 1 — Explore Cusco's main archaeological sites

  • Visit Plaza de Armas
  • Tour Qorikancha Temple of the Sun
  • Explore Sacsayhuaman archaeological site
  • Visit Q'enqo archaeological site
  • See Pukapukara archaeological site
  • Visit Tambomachay Temple of Water
  • End tour at finish point

We shuffled off the minibus right onto the edge of Plaza de Armas, still rubbing sleep from our eyes. The city was already humming—vendors setting up, a couple of stray dogs weaving between legs. Our guide, Maribel, waved us over with a grin and pointed at the cathedral’s shadow stretching across the square. She told us how this spot had been the heart of Inca Cusco before the Spanish rolled in. I kept glancing at the mix of stonework—some walls looked impossibly tight-fitted, others patched up with colonial bricks. It’s weirdly beautiful, you know?

After that we walked (well, climbed) towards Qorikancha—the Temple of the Sun. The air felt thin and sharp in my lungs but maybe that was just excitement or altitude or both. Inside, Maribel showed us where Inca stones met Spanish plaster. She let us run our hands along the cold stone; it almost buzzed under my fingers. Outside again, we piled into the van for Sacsayhuaman. Those walls are massive—like Lego built for giants—and she explained how they’d fit together without mortar. I still can’t wrap my head around it.

We stopped at Q’enqo and Tambomachay too—water trickling somewhere out of sight, eucalyptus on the breeze (smelled almost minty). At one point I tried to say “Pukapukara” correctly and Maribel just laughed—apparently my Quechua accent needs work. Last stop was the South American Camelid Museum where we met llamas and alpacas up close. One nuzzled my sleeve looking for food (I didn’t have any—sorry buddy). The whole day felt like flipping through layers of history with someone who actually lives it.
