Overwater cabin on a Guna island, two boat tours to neighboring reefs and beaches included.

A 3-day tour to Isla Narasgandup in the San Blas Islands, where you stay in a private overwater cabin with direct ocean access and eat meals prepared by your Guna hosts. The package includes two boat tours to nearby islands for swimming and snorkeling, plus transport from the Port of Carti. This is a cultural immersion in an autonomous indigenous territory, not a resort: electricity runs only 6pm to 6am, meals are simple and fresh, and the 2.5–3-hour drive from Panama City crosses mountain roads. Bring your original passport for the Kuna border crossing.

The experience

The journey starts before dawn. If you book the optional shuttle, your driver picks you up from your Panama City hotel between 5:00 and 5:30 a.m. for a 2.5–3-hour drive to the Port of Carti. The road is curvy and the ride is long, so come prepared. Those driving themselves must use a 4x4 SUV: smaller vehicles are not permitted in Guna Yala territory. At the port, the Guna team coordinates everything, though the scene may look chaotic. A lancha then carries you across turquoise water for 35 minutes to Isla Narasgandup, arriving around 10:00 a.m. The boat ride can be bumpy and wet, so bring water protection for your luggage and yourself. If you're prone to motion sickness, pack medication.

Your cabin sits over the ocean with direct access to the water. It has clean beds, fans, and a private bathroom with a shower, though amenities are basic: no air conditioning, no WiFi, and electricity only between 6pm and 6am. A Guna Yala family prepares all your meals from fresh local ingredients: fried fish, mixed seafood, chicken, or lobster with rice, salad, or plantains. Water comes with each meal. On your first afternoon, swim in the clear water, meet members of the local Guna community, or simply rest. Dinner and a Caribbean sunset follow. Each night you stay includes one boat day trip to a different nearby island. On a 3-day stay, you get two island tours. These trips visit reefs and white-sand beaches perfect for swimming and snorkeling, with lunch served on one of the islands. You return to Isla Narasgandup in the afternoon to relax in a hammock or sunbathe before dinner.

On your final morning, checkout is at 8 a.m. Breakfast comes before your second island tour, where you explore new islands and hidden gems of the San Blas archipelago. After returning to Isla Narasgandup for lunch and a last swim, you take the boat back to the Port of Carti. If you booked the shuttle, your driver meets you there and drives you back to Panama City, arriving around 7:00 p.m. Bring cash (there are no ATMs on the islands), and your original passport for the Kuna border crossing. Drones are illegal in San Blas and carry heavy fines. The experience is rustic and cultural, built on the Guna's traditional way of life. Service is simple and unhurried, which is part of what makes it authentic.
