San Blas Islands 3-Day Tour: Private Room & Meals
Three days on a Kuna-hosted island with no schedule to manage
A 3-day island-hopping tour based on Isla Yansailadup in Panama's San Blas Islands, with accommodation in a private bedroom at a family lodge, all meals, and boat access to the Natural Pool, Isla Perro's shipwreck, and other nearby islands. The Kuna hosts arrange transport, meals and tours; you bring flexibility for a rustic, cultural stay far from resort infrastructure. The Experience
The day starts before dawn. Pickup happens between 5:00 and 5:45 AM from your Panama City hotel (5:00–5:15 AM if you're staying in Playa Bonita), and the drive through jungle highlands takes 2.5 to 3 hours over curvy mountain roads. You'll reach the San Blas port around 8:30–9:00 AM, where check-in is informal but organized by the Guna community. A 30–40 minute lancha ride follows, with possible stops at other islands to pick up or drop off travelers, and you arrive on Isla Yansailadup between 9:30–10:00 AM. The island sits in the Lemon Keys, surrounded by the Natural Pool sandbank, Isla Perro's sunken shipwreck, Arena Blanca, and Isla Chichime — all reachable by boat. Lunch and dinner are waiting.
Your bedroom is private with two beds, inside the main lodge; bathrooms and showers are shared and a short walk away. There's no air conditioning, and electricity runs only from 6 PM to 6 AM via generator, so phones and cameras recharge in the main house. Ceilings are open for ventilation, and the setup is closer to tropical camping than a hotel — basic, rustic, authentic. The Kuna family prepares fresh meals three times a day: eggs, fruit and toast for breakfast; fresh-caught fish, chicken, seafood or lobster (lobster costs extra) with rice, salad or plantains for lunch and dinner. Vegetarian options can be arranged. You can bring your own cooler of drinks, water and snacks; the driver stops at a supermarket on the way to San Blas so you can stock up. There are no ATMs on the islands, so bring cash for extras.
Day two is unscheduled. You wake to a traditional Guna breakfast, then spend the full day as you choose — snorkel the reef, lie in a hammock, swim, or rent a SUP board if available. No transfers are planned; the day is yours. On day three, you have the morning free until checkout at 8:00 AM. You can store luggage with island management and continue swimming or paddling. Lunch is at noon. After eating, a boat tour takes you to Island Misdup, a remote new island open to visitors, then to the Natural Pool sandbank before the return journey. You leave the islands around 3:00 PM, arriving back in Panama City between 6:30–7:00 PM.
The boat ride to and from the islands can be bumpy with sea spray, so bring motion sickness medication if you're sensitive, and pack water protection for your luggage. Bring your original passport — you cannot enter Kuna territory without it. Sandflies are common April through December, so insect repellent is essential. Shower water is filtered from ocean water and has high salt content; bring liquid soap, prickly heat powder or wet wipes to rinse it off. Cell service works best with Tigo, the local provider. The experience is unguided; not all host family members speak English, and service moves at island pace. Rain can cancel snorkeling or other activities anytime, and medical care is very limited — serious issues require evacuation to Panama City at your own cost.

What's the boat ride from the port to Isla Yansailadup actually like?
The lancha ride takes 30–40 minutes and may stop at other islands to pick up or drop off guests. It can be bumpy with sea spray, and you may get wet, so pack water-resistant bags and bring motion sickness medication if you're prone to it.
Do I need to arrange my own transport from Panama City, or is it included?
Two of the three options include roundtrip shuttle pickup from your Panama City hotel between 5:00–5:45 AM and return by 6:30–7:00 PM on day three. The third option is accommodation-only and does not include ground transport; you arrange your own way to the port.
What are the bedrooms and bathrooms like on Isla Yansailadup?
Bedrooms are private with two beds, located inside the main lodge, with open ceilings for ventilation. Bathrooms and showers are shared and a short walk away. There's no air conditioning or WiFi, and electricity runs only 6 PM–6 AM. Shower water is filtered ocean water with high salt content, so bring appropriate soap and rinse supplies.
What meals are included, and can I bring my own food?
All three meals are included: traditional Guna breakfast with eggs, fruit and toast; lunch and dinner with fresh fish, chicken, seafood or lobster (lobster is extra), rice, salad and plantains. Vegetarian options can be arranged. You can bring your own cooler of drinks, water and snacks, and the driver stops at a supermarket on the way so you can purchase additional items.
What happens on the second day, and do I have free time?
Day two is completely unscheduled. After breakfast, you have the full day to snorkel the reef, relax on the beach, swim, or rent a SUP board if available. No transfers or organized activities are planned, so the day is yours to spend at your own pace.
What should I bring, and what do I need to know before I go?
Bring your original passport — you cannot enter Kuna territory without it. Pack sunscreen, a hat, insect repellent (sandflies are common April–December), motion sickness medication if needed, personal hygiene items, towels, and water-resistant bags. Bring cash; there are no ATMs on the islands. The drive is 2.5–3 hours over curvy mountain roads, and the boat ride can be bumpy and wet. Medical care is very limited, and serious emergencies require evacuation to Panama City at your own cost.
