You meet the Kuna people between snorkeling sessions, not as a scheduled stop.

A full-day sailboat snorkeling trip in the San Blas Islands includes two island stops with coral reefs, lunch, drinks and a guide who speaks English or Spanish. Pickup from Panama City hotels starts the day at 5:00 AM, and a speedboat ferries you between the dock, the sailboat and the islands. You snorkel, swim and walk white-sand beaches, with the option to visit Kuna communities ashore.

Step-by-step itinerary

San Blas Islands sailing adventure

  • Hotel pickup at 5:00 AM
  • Speedboat transfer to sailboat
  • Snorkel and relax at first Lemon Cay island
  • Snorkel and walk at second Lemon Cay island
  • Speedboat back to dock
  • Drive back to hotel

The experience

The day starts early if you choose pickup from your hotel: a 5:00 AM ride to Carti Port, then a speedboat transfer to the sailboat where the crew briefs you on what's ahead. Without pickup, you meet the boat at the dock. Either way, you're on the water by mid-morning, heading to the first of two Lemon Cays islands. The sailboat anchors offshore. From there, snorkeling gear goes on and you're in the water among coral reefs that see few visitors. The reefs here stay untouched because the islands stay small and the visitor count stays low. Between water time, you can walk the white-sand beach or hang in a hammock under palms.

Lunch comes fresh and locally sourced, eaten either on the sailboat or ashore depending on where the crew decides to anchor that day. After eating, the afternoon splits between more snorkeling at the second island, a walk around it, or time spent with Kuna people who live there: no formal cultural performance, just the chance to meet them if you want to. The Kuna have lived in the San Blas for centuries and still govern the islands themselves, so what you see is their daily life, not a tourist version of it. At 3:00 PM the speedboat pulls you back to the dock for the return to the city, or to your hotel if you booked the dropoff option.

Snorkeling equipment is provided, and the crew knows the reefs well enough to steer you toward the best coral and fish. Moderate drinks come throughout the day. The whole outing runs 12 to 14 hours door-to-door if you include pickup and dropoff, though the actual sailing and snorkeling time is shorter. Pickup is available from PlayaBonita, Gamboa or Panama City hotels depending on which option you choose at checkout.

Is this one for you?Book the pickup option if your hotel is in Panama City and you want to sleep an extra hour at home. The crew handles the early logistics and you step onto the sailboat ready to snorkel. Without pickup, you drive to Carti Port yourself and meet the boat there, which works if you have a rental car or prefer to set your own departure time.

Top questions

What languages is the tour guided in?

Live guide in English and Spanish.

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

What are the Lemon Cays and why is the snorkeling there different from other reef sites?

The Lemon Cays are small islands in the San Blas archipelago where the sailboat anchors for snorkeling. The coral reefs around them stay untouched because visitor numbers stay low and the islands remain undeveloped. Most of the San Blas is protected and governed by the Kuna people themselves, so the reefs don't face the pressure they do in busier tourist zones.

Do I snorkel the whole time or is there time to do other things on the islands?

You split the day between snorkeling and other activities. At each island you can walk the white-sand beach, rest in a hammock, or meet Kuna people if you want to. The crew anchors offshore, so you're in and out of the water on your own schedule during the stops.

What's included in the lunch and drinks?

Lunch is fresh and locally sourced, prepared by the crew. Moderate drinks are served throughout the day. Some islands in the San Blas charge a small fee to step ashore, which is separate from the tour price.

How early does the day start and when do I get back?

If you book pickup, the ride from your hotel leaves at 5:00 AM and you're at the dock by early morning. The speedboat returns you to the port at 3:00 PM, and you're back at your hotel by late afternoon or early evening depending on traffic and distance.

Is snorkeling equipment provided, and do I need experience to join?

Snorkeling gear is included. The tour suits all fitness levels and the crew will brief you on how to use the equipment and where to snorkel safely. If you have limited mobility, the frequent transfers between boat and speedboat may be difficult.
