Snorkeling San Blas Islands from Panama City: 4-Stop Day Tour
A 2.5-hour drive each way gets you to islands most Panama City visitors never reach.
A four-island snorkeling day tour from Panama City takes you to Isla Perro, the Natural Pool, Isla Chichime, and Isla Diablo with a Kuna guide, shared 4x4 transport, shaded boat, fresh lunch, and snorkel gear. You depart between 5:00 and 5:45 am from your Panama City hotel, spend the day swimming and snorkeling at each stop, and return by around 7:00 pm. The long drive over mountain roads is the trade-off for reaching islands that stay quieter than the closer alternatives, and the tour maxes out at 14 travelers.

The experience
The day starts before dawn with pickup from your Panama City lodging, followed by a 2.5 to 3-hour shared 4x4 ride through the mountains to the Caribbean coast. The road is curvy and the pace is slow, but it's the reason the islands themselves stay less crowded than day-trip destinations closer to the city. Once at the port, you board a shaded lancha for a 25 to 30-minute boat ride to Isla Perro, where you snorkel around a famous shipwreck in shallow water full of tropical fish and coral. The boat ride can be wet and bumpy depending on the sea state, but the operator warns you upfront so you can prepare.
From there the tour moves through three more stops: the Natural Pool, a sunken sandbar where you wade through waist-deep turquoise water and spot starfish; Isla Chichime, known for wide sandy beaches and calm water; and Isla Diablo, a small island where you can swim, rinse off, and take photos before the return journey. The pace is relaxed: no fixed schedule, no rushing between islands. A fresh lunch of fish or chicken with rice, salad, and patacones arrives partway through the day, along with one drink (water, soda, or beer). Snorkel gear is provided if you need it, though you're welcome to bring your own. The boat stops at other islands to pick up or drop off other guests, so the group composition shifts slightly throughout the day.
The return boat ride and drive back to Panama City take the same amount of time as the morning journey, so plan to arrive at your hotel around 7:00 pm. All island entrance taxes are included in the price. Bring your original passport (you won't be allowed into Kuna territory without it) along with sunscreen, a hat, towels, and motion-sickness medication if you're sensitive to curvy roads. San Blas has no ATMs, so bring cash if you want to buy extra snacks or drinks on the islands. The Kuna community runs all the services here, and the operator asks that you respect their customs and simple way of life.

Top questions
What languages is the guide in?
Live guide in English and Spanish.
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Child (3 to 9 years); Infant (under 3): free.
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What is the shipwreck at Isla Perro like for snorkeling?
Isla Perro's shipwreck sits in shallow water right off the beach and is home to tropical fish and vibrant coral, making it accessible for snorkelers of different experience levels. You can see the wreck and the marine life around it in clear water.
How many people go on this tour at once?
The tour has a maximum of 14 travelers, split across shared 4x4 vehicles on the drive and shared boats on the water. If you're staying at Playa Bonita, you can book a private shuttle option instead of the shared Panama City pickup.
What's included in the lunch?
Lunch is fresh island-style food prepared with local ingredients: your choice of fish, mixed seafood, or chicken, served with rice, salad, and patacones. One beverage is included: water, soda, or beer. You can bring your own cooler with extra snacks and drinks, and the driver stops at a supermarket on the way so you can buy additional items.
Do I need to bring my own snorkel gear?
Snorkel masks and snorkels are available on request at no extra cost. You're welcome to bring your own equipment if you prefer, and many travelers do.
What should I know about the drive to San Blas?
The drive is 2.5 to 3 hours each way over curvy mountain roads, and the operator emphasizes this upfront because some travelers find it uncomfortable. If you're prone to motion sickness, bring medication. The early pickup time (5:00–5:45 am) means drivers can't wait more than 10 minutes, so be ready on time.
What happens if the weather is bad?
Rain and rough seas are possible, and the itinerary may shift depending on ocean and weather conditions. The operator is not responsible for road or ocean conditions, and there are no refunds for weather. The Kuna guides make decisions about which islands to visit based on the day's conditions.
