The experience

You start from your Muscat hotel and head south in a 4WD vehicle toward Wadi Tiwi, a canyon lined with palm trees and fed by mountain streams. The wadi feels greener than the surrounding desert because of its plantations and water flow. You'll swim in the wadi pools and have time to picnic before moving on. The guide stops at Wadi Shab for photos: an enormous gorge that shows the power of water carving through rock over time.

Bimmah Sinkhole comes next: a massive crater near the coast with a small lake at its bottom, believed to have formed by meteor impact. You can swim in the crater lake and take photos from the rim before heading to the final stop. Fins Beach is strikingly white and pebbly, with water so blue it stops most travelers mid-step. The afternoon winds down here before the drive back to Muscat.

The tour runs seven to eight hours total. Your guide speaks English and can also speak Arabic. Bottled water is provided throughout the day, and the 4WD vehicle handles the rough terrain that regular cars cannot cross. Lunch is not included, so plan to bring food or eat during the picnic stop at Wadi Tiwi.
