The experience
Eight hours and four stops shape this day. The morning starts at the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, built from 300,000 tonnes of Indian sandstone with a dome rising 50 metres above the prayer hall floor. The main musalla is 74.4 by 74.4 metres and can hold over 6,500 worshippers. The entire complex spreads across 416,000 square metres and was inaugurated in 2001 to mark 30 years of the Sultan's reign. From there the route turns inland toward Nakhal, a small village in the foothills where date palms grow in terraced rows and a 350-year-old fortress rises from the mountain rock itself.
Nakhal fortress has witnessed centuries of battles and still holds hidden escape routes and secret passages. You walk through restored rooms decorated in the original style and climb to the top, where the view spans the mountains and the green date plantations below. After the fortress, the tour moves through the old village to the Nakhal hot springs, where a small river fed by hot spring water runs through a green wadi. Locals come here to walk and bathe their feet in the warm water.
The final stop is Wakan village, perched 2,000 metres above sea level in the Western Hajar Mountains. Terraced gardens step down the mountainside, overlooking both the surrounding peaks and the Wadi Mistal below. The village sits on the border between two governorates and feels removed from the coast you left that morning. A 4x4 vehicle handles the mountain roads. Your guide speaks English throughout and the tour ends with drop-off back around Muscat.
