The experience
The day starts at the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, built from 300,000 tonnes of Indian sandstone and opened in 2001. The main prayer hall spans 74.4 by 74.4 metres with a central dome rising 50 metres overhead. The entire complex sits on 416,000 square metres and can hold up to 20,000 worshippers across its spaces. From there, the route turns inland toward Nakhal Fort, a 350-year-old structure that rises from the mountain rock above a small village of date palm plantations. The fortress has been restored and you can walk through its rooms, still decorated in original style, and climb to the top for views across the mountains and green valley below.
After the fort, the tour follows the old village down to Nakhal Hot Spring, where a small river fed by hot spring water runs through a green wadi. You can wade into the warm water: locals come here regularly to walk in it. The final stop is Wakan village, perched 2,000 metres above sea level in the Western Hajar Mountains, with terraced gardens that look out over the surrounding peaks and Wadi Mistal below. The 4WD vehicle handles the mountain terrain, and your English-speaking guide provides context at each stop.
The tour runs eight hours from morning departure through afternoon return to Muscat. Pickup and drop-off are included from your hotel in the Muscat area, along with bottled water and transport in a comfortable 4WD vehicle. Entrance fees to the sites and lunch are separate costs you arrange on the day.
