You fly into Lukla, trek for eleven days through Sherpa villages and monasteries, climb to Everest Base Camp and Kalapatthar for sunrise, then descend and fly back to Kathmandu. All lodges, flights, and transport are arranged; you bring fitness and acclimatization patience. The trek operates in all weather, so pack layers and waterproofs.
A small plane drops you onto a runway that feels more like a ledge. The Tenzing-Hillary Airport at Lukla sits at 2,800 meters, and the moment you step out, the air tastes thinner. This is where the Everest Base Camp trek actually begins—not in Kathmandu, but here, on this miniature airstrip carved into the Himalayan slope. The 40-minute flight from Kathmandu gives you your first real view of what's coming: snowcapped peaks stacked against the morning light, and the knowledge that you're about to walk into them for the next eleven days.
The route moves through Sherpa settlements and Buddhist monasteries, gaining elevation in stages that let your body adjust. Namche Bazaar, the main hub at 3,440 meters, sits where the Dudh Koshi and Bhote Koshi rivers meet, and it's where you get your first clear sighting of Everest itself—a distant white triangle above the ridges of Lhotse and Nuptse. You spend a full acclimatization day here, which means a short hike to a viewpoint and time to walk the town, visit the Visitor Center, and let your lungs catch up. The trek from Namche pushes higher through rhododendron and pine forests, past the oldest monastery in the region at Pangboche (which, locals will tell you, holds relics of the yeti), and into the upper valleys where the air gets noticeably colder and thinner with each pass.
By day eight, you're at Gorakshep, 5,150 meters, and the next morning you wake before dawn to climb Kalapatthar, 5,545 meters, for the sunrise. This is the moment. Everest fills the horizon—not alone, but ringed by Pumori, Khumbutse, and the whole Himalayan spine lit gold and pink as the sun comes up. You stand there in the cold, breathing hard, and understand why people come back to this mountain again and again. The descent takes two days, retracing through Pheriche and back down to Namche, then the final push to Lukla. The flight back to Kathmandu feels like surfacing; you land in the city, spend an evening in Thamel if you want, and then it's time to leave.
The trek includes all your lodge accommodation (11 nights on the mountain, 2 nights in Kathmandu), both flights between Kathmandu and Lukla, and private transport to and from the domestic airport. You walk with a Sherpa guide and porters who carry the heavy loads, which means you move at a pace that lets you actually see the landscape instead of just surviving it. Thirteen days total, from arrival to departure, with the physical demand front-loaded into the first few days and the altitude doing most of the work after that.
