Walk to the base of Mount Everest and stand where climbers begin their ascent

A 10-day guided trek from Lukla to Everest Base Camp with round-trip flights from Kathmandu, tea house accommodation, all meals, and an English-speaking guide. The route passes through Namche Bazaar, the Sherpa capital, and Tyangboche monastery, and crosses the Khumbu glacier with views of Mount Everest and neighboring peaks over 8,000 meters. Children from age 13 are welcome; a moderate level of physical fitness is required.

The Experience

The trek starts with a flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, one of the world's most dramatic mountain landings, followed by a trek through the Dhudhkosi river valley. You walk at a pace that lets your body adjust to the altitude as you climb toward Everest Base Camp. Along the way, you pass through Namche Bazaar, where Sherpa traders and climbers gather, and stop at Tyangboche monastery, a centuries-old Buddhist site set high in the mountains. The guide leads you across the Khumbu glacier and up to Everest Base Camp itself—the staging ground where expeditions to the summit begin.

Tea house lodging means you sleep in simple, heated rooms run by local families rather than in tents. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are provided throughout the trek, and the guide handles the route and pacing. You carry only a day pack; a porter can be arranged separately if needed. The round-trip flight from Kathmandu to Lukla and back is included, as is an air-conditioned vehicle for transfers. All park fees and taxes are covered.

The trek takes 10 days total, which is the compressed timeframe that makes Everest Base Camp reachable without weeks away. You'll see Mount Everest and its neighboring 8,000-meter peaks, the Khumbu icefall, and the lifestyle of the Sherpa people who live and work in these mountains. Necessary gear—sleeping bag, down jacket and duffel bag—is provided and returned after the trek ends.

Top questions

What's the actual walk like on the Everest Base Camp trek?

The trek follows established trails through the Khumbu valley, gaining altitude gradually over 10 days. You walk during the day and stay in tea houses at night, so the pace is steady but not rushed—the guide adjusts it based on how your body handles the altitude. The final push to Everest Base Camp itself is a day walk from the last tea house.

Do I need climbing experience to reach Everest Base Camp?

No climbing experience is needed. The trek is a walk to the base camp, not a climb to the summit. You need a moderate level of physical fitness and the ability to walk for several hours a day at altitude, but the route itself is a hiking trail, not a technical climb.

What is Namche Bazaar and why do we stop there?

Namche Bazaar is the main town in the Khumbu region and the center of Sherpa culture and commerce. The trek stops there to let your body acclimatize to the altitude before continuing higher. It's also where you can see how the local Sherpa people live and trade.

How does the 10-day timeframe compare to longer Everest Base Camp treks?

The 10-day trek reaches Everest Base Camp within a shorter time commitment than longer versions. It follows the same core route—Lukla to Namche Bazaar to Tyangboche to Everest Base Camp—but moves at a steady pace without extra rest days or side trips.

What happens if I'm not acclimatizing well to the altitude?

The guide monitors how you're handling the altitude throughout the trek. Tea house stops are built into the itinerary to allow acclimatization. If altitude sickness becomes severe, descent is possible, though the trek is designed for people with moderate fitness to complete it as scheduled.

Are there any age or health restrictions for this trek?

Children are welcome from age 13. The trek is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, pregnant travelers, or those with poor cardiovascular health. A moderate level of physical fitness is necessary to complete the 10 days.
