The Experience
I never thought I’d laugh so hard trying to pronounce “Spreetshoogte” before coffee. Our guide, Martha, just grinned and let me struggle. That first morning out of Windhoek felt like stepping off a map—yellow grass flickering past the window, then suddenly that drop down the pass where the whole Namib Desert just opens up. We stopped in Solitaire for apple pie (yes, really) and I swear even the air tasted like cinnamon dust and diesel. It’s funny what sticks with you.
The next days blurred into a rhythm of red sand and early starts—boots crunching up Dune 45 before sunrise, sand cold at first then warming fast. Sossusvlei looked empty but it wasn’t: beetles making tiny tracks, a jackal trotting by as if we weren’t there. Dead Vlei was stranger than I expected—those blackened trees against white clay, everything silent except for our shoes scuffing. Martha pointed out how the light changed every minute; she was right. I still think about that view.
Swakopmund was a surprise—German bakeries and Atlantic fog after all that desert heat. Then north along the Skeleton Coast to Cape Cross: thousands of seals barking and flopping over each other, and that smell (honestly, nothing prepares you). We turned inland into Damaraland where kids waved from roadside villages and the mountains looked purple at dusk. The Twyfelfontein rock engravings were older than anything I’ve ever touched—our local guide traced his finger over the shapes quietly while we listened to birds somewhere behind us.
Etosha felt different again—dusty white pans stretching forever, giraffes moving like they had all day to get anywhere. Game drives meant hours watching elephants appear out of nowhere or waiting for lions to blink in the shade. At night by the lodge waterhole I sat with my tea listening to frogs and distant hyenas, not really wanting to sleep because who knows what you’ll miss if you close your eyes too soon.
