The experience

The tour starts with an early pickup in Windhoek and a transfer to the shuttle departure point, then heads south through mountain ranges and open savannah toward the Namib-Naukluft area. You arrive at the lodge in the afternoon with time to settle in and absorb the desert around you. The route passes through Solitaire, a small settlement famous for its apple pie at Moose McGregor Bakery and a collection of vintage cars: a natural photography stop on the way into the dunes.

Day two is built around the Sossusvlei excursion. Dune 45, rising 170 meters and located 45 kilometers from the Sesriem gate, is one of the most photographed sand dunes in the park. You climb to the ridge and look out across endless red dunes. Big Daddy, approximately 325 meters tall, sits between Sossusvlei and Deadvlei and offers one of the most dramatic viewpoints in the region. Deadvlei itself is the surreal white clay pan ringed by some of the world's tallest red dunes: the colors, textures, and light make it one of Namibia's most extraordinary photography locations. Sesriem Canyon, a short walk from the main sites, cuts through rock formations and occasional water pools, providing a striking contrast to the open desert.

Day three takes you from the desert toward the coast. You travel through the Gaub and Kuiseb mountain passes and watch the landscape shift as the Namib meets the Atlantic. Arrival in Swakopmund is in the afternoon. Day four splits between two experiences: a morning marine wildlife cruise from Walvis Bay aboard a catamaran, where you encounter Cape fur seals, dolphins, pelicans, and flamingos while enjoying Walvis Bay oysters and sparkling wine on board; and an afternoon 4x4 adventure to Sandwich Harbour, where towering dunes drop directly into the ocean. You navigate sandy tracks with an experienced guide, stop at scenic viewpoints, and walk or climb dunes at the lagoon before returning to Swakopmund. The final day is the return journey to Windhoek, with afternoon arrival and transfer to your hotel.

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

What are Deadvlei and Dune 45, and why do photographers come to them?

Deadvlei is a white clay pan surrounded by some of the world's tallest red sand dunes in Namib-Naukluft National Park, creating one of Namibia's most photographed and surreal landscapes. Dune 45, named for its location 45 kilometers from the Sesriem gate, rises about 170 meters and offers panoramic views across endless dunes. You climb to the ridge and photograph the surrounding desert from the summit. Both are stops on day two of the tour.

Does the tour include the marine wildlife cruise and the Sandwich Harbour 4x4 drive?

Yes. Day four includes both: a morning catamaran cruise from Walvis Bay where you see seals, dolphins, pelicans, and flamingos, with oysters and sparkling wine on board; and an afternoon 4x4 adventure to Sandwich Harbour, where dunes meet the Atlantic Ocean. You navigate sandy tracks with a guide, stop at viewpoints, and walk or climb dunes at the lagoon before returning to Swakopmund.

What is Sandwich Harbour and what makes it different from the desert dunes?

Sandwich Harbour is a dramatic coastal landscape within Namib-Naukluft National Park where towering sand dunes plunge directly into the Atlantic Ocean. Unlike the open desert of Sossusvlei and Deadvlei, Sandwich Harbour is the place where the Namib meets the sea. You reach it by 4x4 vehicle and can walk the beach or climb nearby dunes while watching the desert-ocean transition.

How does the group size work on this tour?

This is a small shared group experience, which keeps the pace relaxed and personal rather than crowded. The tour departs from Windhoek with hotel pickup included, and an English-speaking guide leads the entire 5 days.

What happens on the drive from Windhoek to the desert on day one?

You have an early morning pickup in Windhoek, then transfer to the Windhoek Truck Port where the shared shuttle departs for the Namib Desert. The route travels south through mountain ranges, open savannah, and desert plains toward the Namib-Naukluft area, with a stop at Solitaire along the way. Arrival at the lodge is in the afternoon.

Is there time to explore Swakopmund on the coast?

Yes. You arrive in Swakopmund in the afternoon of day three and have the evening to explore the coastal town, known for its German colonial architecture, seaside promenade, and relaxed atmosphere. Day four includes the full-day marine and 4x4 activities, and you depart for Windhoek on day five after breakfast.
