The experience

You leave Windhoek heading south and climb Spreetshoogte Pass, a 50-kilometre route that cuts through the Great Escarpment with a 2,000-metre drop visible from the top. The pass connects the Khomas Highland to the Namib Desert and was built by a farmer during World War II to reach his farm at the base. From there the landscape opens into semi-desert plains and arid mountains, and you drop down into Solitaire, a small desert town known for its apple pie and a bar where you can watch the sun set over the Namib. The drive continues to Sesriem Canyon, a narrow gorge carved by the Tsauchab River over millions of years, where early pioneers tied six leather straps together to reach water deep in the pools below.

You stay overnight at Desert Quiver Camp and wake before dawn on day two. An early start gets you to the Namib-Naukluft Park gate when it opens, and your guide drives to Dune 45, where you hike up the red sand to the top. From there you walk to Deadvlei, a stark white clay pan ringed by dead trees and towering dunes, then to Big Daddy, one of the highest dunes in the world at nearly 400 metres. You visit Sossusvlei itself, the dried-up mud pan surrounded by red dunes that is Namibia's most photographed landscape, and take a short hike into Sesriem Canyon. If time allows, you eat lunch at Sesriem before the drive back to Windhoek, arriving in the late afternoon.

The tour includes park entrance fees, fuel, a professional guide who speaks English or French, a rental vehicle with insurance, breakfast and dinner each night, and all activities and visits listed in the itinerary.
