From there, the road opens into the Namib-Naukluft Park, and the red sand begins to dominate the horizon.

Day two is the heart of the tour. You climb Dune 45 at sunrise—85 meters of soft sand that takes an hour to ascend, and the light at the top shifts from gold to crimson as the sun clears the desert. From there, you walk into Deadvlei, a white clay pan ringed by towering red dunes, where ancient camelthorn trees stand leafless and frozen against the vivid hues and deep blue sky. The contrast is stark enough to stop you.
