The Experience

You start in Windhoek and head north to Mount Etjo Game Reserve for your first night, where an afternoon game drive focuses on the black and white rhinos the reserve has worked to protect. The next three days are based at Etosha National Park, where sunrise game drives catch predators still active at the waterholes, and you can walk out onto the Etosha Pan itself—a 4,500-square-kilometer saline desert—before returning to camp for a floodlit waterhole visit after dinner. The park's central camp at Halali offers a pool break and lunch stop between morning and afternoon drives.

From Etosha you travel west into the Kunene Region to visit the Otjikandero Himba Village, where a guided tour gives you time to learn about the Himba people's traditional way of life and share your own culture with them. The route then heads to the coast, passing through the Skeleton Coast National Park—a landscape of shipwrecks and fog-bound cliffs—before reaching Cape Cross Seal Reserve. During breeding season (November to December) up to 200,000 Cape fur seals gather on the beach. You camp at Spitzkoppe, a granite mountain range rising from the desert floor, known for ancient San rock paintings and star-filled night skies.

After a stop at the Zeila Shipwreck, you arrive in Swakopmund early afternoon with time to explore the town on foot or join optional activities like sandboarding, quad biking or skydiving. Dinner is at your own expense in one of the town's restaurants, with your guide offering recommendations. The next day you have a late 11:30 departure, leaving the morning free for another optional activity before driving south into the Namib Desert to Desert Camp.

Your final full day explores the dunes themselves: Deadvlei's white salt pan ringed by dead camel thorn trees, Sossusvlei's red dunes where the sand reaches some of the world's highest peaks, Dune 45 for photos, and Sesriem Canyon, a narrow gorge that serves as a water source for local wildlife. On the last morning you spend an hour at the Solitaire Carnivore Conservation project learning about cheetah before returning to Windhoek past the Naukluft Mountains, arriving early afternoon.
