The experience

The tour starts with pickup from Windhoek airport or your hotel, then heads south into the Namib Desert. On day two, you drive to Dune 45, a landmark 45 kilometers from Sesriem Gate along a paved road, before continuing deeper into Sossusvlei itself. The salt and clay pan sits ringed by high red dunes that shift color as the light changes. You explore on foot in the early morning, when the desert is quietest, then move into Deadvlei: a vast expanse of cracked white clay dotted with skeletal camel thorn trees that stand against the massive dunes behind them.

Sesriem Canyon, carved by the Tsauchab River into sedimentary rock about 4 kilometers from the gate, is the second major stop in the area. The canyon runs roughly one kilometer long and reaches up to 30 meters deep. The name comes from Afrikaans settlers on the Dorsland Trek who had to tie six rawhide thongs together to lower a bucket deep enough to reach water. You visit this on the way through the region, and the guide explains what you're standing in as you walk it.

On day three, the drive back to Windhoek follows the scenic Spreetshoogte Pass, a mountain route connecting the Namib Desert to the Khomas Highland. En route, you stop in Solitaire, a small settlement near the Namib-Naukluft National Park where a bakery serves the area's famous apple pie. The guide drops you at your Windhoek hotel or the airport for your onward flight. Two nights' accommodation at Elegant Desert Lodge or a similar property, all park entrance fees, the air-conditioned vehicle, and guide services are included.
