The Experience

The tour starts with a pickup at 7:15 from your Windhoek hotel and heads west through small towns toward the coast. You stop at a local crystal market, then reach Walvis Bay Lagoon—a wetland site where flamingos and other water birds gather—for a picnic lunch before arriving in Swakopmund mid-afternoon. The seaside town is yours to explore on foot. That evening you stay at Hotel A La Mer in a twin room with en-suite bathroom.

The next morning, you have the option to join sand-boarding in the coastal dune fields (extra cost), or skip it and rest. Either way, at 11:15 you're picked up and travel inland via Kuiseb Pass and Gaub Pass toward Solitaire and the desert camp. You arrive late afternoon, take a short walk to watch the sunset over the Naukluft Mountain range, and overnight in a twin room at the camp.

Day three is the core of the tour. You leave at dawn to reach the park gate for sunrise, then drive down an ancient riverbed surrounded by towering dunes to the 2x4 parking area (around 55 kilometers in). A 4x4 shuttle takes you deeper into Sossusvlei. On foot, you explore the vlei itself, then move into Deadvlei—a vast expanse of bleached cracked clay dotted with skeletal camel thorn trees, framed by dunes that shift color as the light changes. If you have the energy, you can climb Big Daddy Dune, the highest in the area, for views across the desert. After brunch at Sossusvlei, you stop at Dune 45 on the drive back for photographs, then visit Sesriem Canyon—a narrow geological formation carved by water that once flowed here. You climb down into it before returning to the camp.

On the final morning, you have an early breakfast, then travel to Solitaire where you board an open vehicle for a one-hour visit to a local cheetah conservation project. The staff explain the work they do and why certain animals cannot be released back into the wild, and you get close-up photos of the world's fastest land mammal. After that, the tour ends with a return to Windhoek.

The one-hour visit includes an explanation of the conservation work, information about the animals, and close-up photo opportunities with the world's fastest land mammal.

You should have at least a moderate level of physical fitness. The tour involves walking on sand dunes, climbing down into Sesriem Canyon, and optional climbs like Big Daddy Dune.
