The Experience

The tour departs Windhoek after a pre-departure briefing and heads north to Mount Etjo Game Reserve, where you set up camp and join an afternoon game drive looking for black and white rhinos. From there you move into Etosha National Park for three days of game drives from waterhole to waterhole—sunrise departures catch predators still active, and the floodlit waterhole at camp draws rhino, elephant, giraffe and lion after dark. Your guide cooks dinner over an open fire each night.

The route then turns west toward the coast, stopping at Otjikandero Himba Village for a guided walk through the settlement and a chance to learn how the Himba people live and practice their traditional customs. You reach Cape Cross mid-afternoon to see one of the world's largest breeding colonies of Cape fur seals—during breeding season (November–December) up to 200,000 seals gather on the beach. After a night at Spitzkoppe, a granite mountain range rising from the desert floor, you arrive in Swakopmund for one night in a hotel room instead of a tent. Dinner that night is at your own expense in town, though your guide can recommend restaurants. The morning departure is at 11:30, leaving time for optional activities like sandboarding or quad biking if you want them.

South of Swakopmund, the tour crosses the Tropic of Capricorn and enters the Namib Desert. A pre-dawn departure on day 8 gets you to Dune 45 at first light to climb to the summit and watch the sunrise; you then walk through Sossusvlei and Deadvlei, where bleached clay and skeletal trees stand against massive dunes. The afternoon includes Sesriem Canyon. Over the next three days you move deeper south through the Namib Rand Nature Reserve to Klein Aus, then to the ghost town of Kolmanskop (abandoned after the diamond boom ended in the early 1900s) and the colonial town of Luderitz on the Atlantic. On the return drive to camp, the guide watches for wild horses that roam between Luderitz and Aus—their presence in the desert is still unexplained. The final two days take you to Hell's Bend viewpoint overlooking Fish River Canyon, the second-largest canyon in the world, and then to the Quiver Tree Forest, where roughly 250 quiver trees (Namibia's national tree) stand under open sky. You camp here for the last night before the long drive back to Windhoek, arriving late afternoon.
