The experience

The day starts with an express ferry crossing from Tarifa that takes up to an hour. Once you arrive at Tangier City Port, your private guide meets you and the itinerary unfolds without other groups tagging along. You'll drive through Perdicaris Forest, named after an American kidnapping incident in 1904, then head to Hercules Caves, where the sea entrance is shaped like Africa when viewed from the water: a formation believed carved by the Phoenicians. The cave sits next to the summer palace of the King of Morocco and has two ways in: one from the sea, one from land.

Cape Spartel comes next, where you stand at the meeting point of the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, with views across the Strait toward Spain. Then comes the camel ride at Achakkar beach along the forest edge: the kind of moment that feels both unexpected and inevitable on a Moroccan day. After that, you'll visit the Tangier Kasbah, a complex of castles on a hilltop built by Sultan Moulay Ismail in the 17th century, and stop at the American Legation, the first American public property outside the United States, a reminder of diplomatic ties between Morocco and the U.S. dating back centuries.

Lunch happens in a Moroccan restaurant where you'll eat one of the world's most varied cuisines, then you have free time to explore Petite Socco, once one of Morocco's greatest markets. The square was home to writers, businessmen and diplomats. Now it's a place to wander colorful stalls and see traditional craftsmanship up close. The return ferry crossing takes up to an hour, and you're back in Tarifa by evening.
