The experience
You arrive at Tangier port and meet your private guide, then travel by air-conditioned minivan through Perdicaris Park to Cape Spartel. The lighthouse still operates as it has since eight international powers founded it, and from the clifftop you can see both the Atlantic and Mediterranean. The point where they're believed to meet. A short break at one of the cafes lets you take in the view before moving on.
The Caves of Hercules come next: a pre-historic site shrouded in local legend, with an opening to the sea shaped like the African continent. From there, you walk uphill into the Kasbah District, where the Bab Bhar (Gate to the Sea) frames views of the Old Medina, the port, and Gibraltar. The Kasbah Museum occupies a palace where Sultan Moulay Ismail lived in the 17th century. Its rooms hold Roman-era artifacts, antiques, rugs and chandeliers that trace the region's history.
Your guide leads you through the Medina's winding streets and into the souks: markets divided by what they sell, from spices and olives to fish, crafts and coffee. You stop at a communal oven or bakery to see how locals work, then visit the American Legation, now a museum. It's the first U.S. administrative building built outside America after Independence, and Morocco was the first nation worldwide to recognize American independence. Letters between Sultan Moulay Suleiman and George Washington sit in the collection as proof of that bond.
