The experience
You arrive in Tangier by TGV train from Casablanca: a two-hour journey that replaces a long drive. Your guide meets you at the station platform and you board a minibus for the rest of the day. The first stop is Cape Spartel, a headland 44 kilometers north where you stand at the meeting point of the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea, with the Spanish coast visible across the Strait.
Next is the Hercules Caves, a complex carved into the clifftside near the King's summer palace. The sea entrance is known as "The Map of Africa" because its shape mirrors the continent when viewed from the water: a formation believed to date to Phoenician times. After the caves you ride a camel along Achakkar Beach on the Atlantic coast, then head inland to the Tangier Kasbah, a palace complex built by Sultan Moulay Ismail in the 17th century, now overlooking the city from a hilltop.
The walking portion begins in the medina, Tangier's old city. You pass through the Petit Socco, once one of Morocco's greatest markets and a gathering place for writers, diplomats and merchants, and the Grand Socco beyond it. You'll also visit the American Legation, the first American public property outside the United States, and the Moshe Nahon Synagogue, built by a chief of an important banking family. The narrow streets reveal colorful markets and local craftsmanship. At midday you have time to eat at a local restaurant. The meal is your own cost. The train returns you to Casablanca by late afternoon.
