The Experience
“Wait, is that actually the color of the water?” I blurted out before I could stop myself. Our guide Luka just grinned and nodded, letting the boat drift for a second so we could stare at this weird blue glow bouncing off the cave walls. I’d seen photos of Montenegro’s Blue Cave but nothing really prepares you for that first shock of color—almost electric under the stone ceiling. Someone behind me laughed because I nearly dropped my phone trying to get a photo. The air inside was cool and salty, and honestly, it smelled like summer should.
The ride out from Kotor was already a bit of an adventure. We zipped past those old stone walls and little fishing boats bobbing around like they were waiting for something. Luka pointed out Our Lady of the Rocks as we slowed down—he told us about how locals built it by sinking old ships full of rocks (I tried to imagine that, can’t say I managed). In Perast we had just enough time to wander—baroque facades, sleepy cats on warm steps, one old man nodding at us from his bench like he’d been there forever. It felt good to stretch our legs before heading back to the boat.
Mamula Island was next—a ring of crumbling fortress walls with seagulls circling overhead and stories about World War II prisoners echoing in my head after Luka’s quick history rundown. Not exactly cheerful but weirdly beautiful in its own way. Then came those submarine tunnels near Herceg Novi—dark, echoey, kind of spooky if you ask me. Luka joked about hiding submarines from “the world” (his words) and everyone went quiet for a minute listening to our voices bounce off concrete.
By the time we anchored outside the Blue Cave again for swimming, the sun was high and everything felt slower. Cold beer in hand (included—nice touch), feet dangling overboard into water so clear you could count pebbles on the bottom. Forty minutes felt both long and not enough; I still think about floating there with sunlight flickering through blue water all around us. So yeah… if you’re looking for a day trip from Kotor that mixes history with just messing around in beautiful places, this Blue Cave speedboat tour is pretty much it.
