The Experience

The captain at the Limitless Speedboat dock — a man named Marko who'd been running these tours for eight years — didn't rush us. He checked our life jackets twice, explained the 20-minute swim stop at the Blue Cave like he was telling us something he wanted us to actually remember, and then we were off from the Kotor waterfront into the bay. The boat itself was new, sleek, nothing like the wooden fishing vessels you see tied up along the Old Town. Within minutes the limestone cliffs started closing in and the water shifted from grey-green to something almost unreal — that electric blue that photographs never quite capture.

Our first stop was Our Lady of the Rocks, the man-made island that sits about a kilometer offshore. Marko told us the story while we approached: seafarers had been dropping stones into the water for centuries, each one a prayer or a thank-you for making it home. By the 1630s there was enough of an island to build a church on it. Inside — and here's the thing: you can't wear shorts or sleeveless shirts, so bring a light cover-up — there are 68 baroque paintings by a local artist named Tripo Kokolja and hundreds of silver plaques engraved with maritime scenes. It's small, dense with detail, and you feel the weight of all those voyages in the room. The entry fee is 5 euros extra, not included in the tour price.

Then we headed to the Blue Cave itself. The boat slowed as we approached the cliff face, and Marko cut the engine so we could hear the water lapping inside the cave mouth. It's narrow, cool, and genuinely strange to be inside a cliff face on the water. The tunnel is maybe a minute of travel, but it sticks with you. On the way back to Kotor we stopped for photos of Perast, the small town across the bay with its bell towers and terracotta roofs, then headed in. The whole thing took just under three hours from departure to dock.
