The experience

The boat leaves the Port of Kotor and runs 50 minutes down the bay, passing the coastline of Perast, Tivat Bay and Herceg Novi Bay as the skipper points out ancient fishermen villages and the landscape. The route itself is the first stop. You're seeing the Bay of Kotor from the water, not from a shore road.

At the Blue Cave, you get a 30-minute break to swim in the bright blue water and use snorkelling gear if you want it. The cave is the main event of the morning, and the time is long enough to actually get in the water instead of circling it. After that, the boat moves to Mamula Island, a small fortified island at the entrance of the bay built in the 19th century and used as a prison during World War II. You have 10 to 15 minutes for a panoramic view and the skipper explains the island's history. Next is the submarine tunnel near Herceg Novi, carved into the rocky coastline during the Yugoslav era as a secret naval hideout. You stop for 10 minutes to take photos inside.

The last stop is Our Lady of the Rocks, a man-made island in front of Perast. You spend 20 minutes walking on it and visiting the church and museum with a view back across the bay. The whole tour runs three hours from start to finish, which means you're back in Kotor by mid-morning or early afternoon depending on your departure time.
