Speed across Kotor Bay to the Blue Cave with island stops and stories

You’ll ride a speedboat across Kotor Bay with a local skipper, swim in the surreal glow of the Blue Cave, circle Mamula’s fortress with its WWII stories, slip into an abandoned submarine tunnel, and step onto Our Lady of the Rocks island to see its centuries-old church up close. Expect salty air, laughter, and moments that linger long after you’re dry again.

The Experience

The first thing I remember is the slap of salt on my lips as our speedboat shot out from Kotor’s old harbor, sunlight bouncing off the water like someone scattered coins everywhere. Our skipper, Marko, grinned at us—he had that Montenegrin calm, but you could tell he loved showing off his bay. The air smelled faintly of pine and diesel. We zipped past stone villages clinging to the shore, laundry flapping from balconies. There was music playing somewhere behind me—just loud enough to make you smile but not drown out the wind.

I didn’t expect to feel nervous about swimming in the Blue Cave, but when we got there (after maybe 50 minutes?), it was so blue it looked fake. Everyone went quiet for a second before someone just laughed and jumped in. I followed—couldn’t resist—and honestly, it felt like diving into liquid sapphire. Cold at first, then you get used to it. I kept opening my eyes underwater because even down there it glowed. Marko tossed us snorkels if we wanted them. I still think about that color.

Afterwards we stopped by Mamula Island—Marko told us some heavy history about its time as a prison during WWII, which stuck with me more than I thought it would. We didn’t go ashore but circled slowly while he pointed out old stone walls and let us take photos. Then there was this submarine tunnel carved right into the cliffs; echoey inside, weirdly silent except for our voices bouncing around. The last stop was Our Lady of the Rocks—tiny man-made island with a church that felt almost too delicate for all that sea around it. Inside smelled like candle wax and old wood; I tried to say “Hvala” (thank you) to one of the caretakers and she smiled politely—I probably butchered it.

By the time we headed back toward Kotor, sunburnt and salty and a little tired, I realized I’d lost track of time completely—which is rare for me on tours like this. Something about being out on that bay makes everything else blur away.

What’s included

Your day includes speedboat fuel and insurance, bottled water or soda pop to keep cool under that sun, all entry fees—including admission to both Blue Cave and Our Lady of the Rocks—a licensed English-speaking skipper-guide who shares stories along every stretch of water, use of snorkeling equipment if you want it (I did), plus music onboard as you cruise between stops before returning to port salty-haired and happy.
