Four divers, one boat, sites chosen for the conditions

Scuba diving in Mahahual on the Mesoamerican reef with Aluxdivers, where groups stay at four divers per instructor and dive sites are selected each day based on visibility and your experience level. You choose between a one-tank or two-tank dive. The operator provides the guide in English, Spanish or French, and meets you at the dive center to set up gear and brief you before heading out. Dives run hourly between 9am and 4pm every day.

The experience

You meet at the dive center at your chosen time and set up your gear with the instructor, who walks through a safety briefing before you board the boat. The Mesoamerican reef here holds coral gardens, sea turtles, tropical fish and underwater caves. Which site you visit depends on what your group has done before and where visibility is best that day. Aluxdivers has run dives for over 20 years and keeps boats to four divers plus one instructor, so you're not herded into a larger group or mixed with divers of wildly different experience.

The dive itself is 3.5 hours from start to finish. You choose whether you want one tank or two tanks when you book, and the instructor tailors the depth and the pace to match your certification level. Bottled water is included. The operator handles all fees and taxes. Dives depart every hour between 9am and 4pm, seven days a week, so you can fit a dive around the rest of your day in Costa Maya.

Is this one for you?Book the two-tank dive if you want to explore two different reef sites and spend more time underwater. The one-tank option works if you're fitting a dive into a shorter window or testing the water before committing to a longer bottom time. Either way, groups stay small enough that the instructor knows every diver's comfort level and can adjust the pace on the spot.
