The reef sits in water so shallow and calm that turtles graze on the sand beside you.

Guided snorkeling in Costa Maya takes you into Mexico's second-largest barrier reef, where you spend an hour in the water exploring two distinct zones: a sandy area where green and white turtles feed, and the reef itself lined with corals and fish. A professional guide and captain lead the outing, which includes snorkeling equipment and bottled water; the boat ride to and from the site takes 15 minutes each way. Children from age 4 are welcome, and the activity suits all fitness levels.

The Experience

The snorkeling happens in protected water, shielded from the open sea by the barrier reef itself. You'll work with a guide and captain who know where the turtles congregate and which sections of the reef hold the most color. The two zones you explore are deliberately different: the first is shallow sand and seagrass where you can watch turtles move across the bottom, and the second brings you to the reef structure itself, where the corals and fish populations make the water feel crowded with life. Depth averages 1.5 meters, reaching 3 meters at the deepest point.

The full outing is 90 minutes from start to finish—15 minutes by boat to reach the site, an hour in the water, and the return trip. Equipment is provided, so you arrive with nothing but a swimsuit and sunscreen. The guide speaks English or Spanish and stays with the group throughout, pointing out what you're looking at and making sure everyone is comfortable in the water. Bottled water is included.

Top questions

What's the water like where you actually snorkel in Costa Maya?

The snorkeling takes place in calm, protected water averaging 1.5 meters deep, with a maximum depth of 3 meters. The barrier reef itself shields the area from the open sea, so the water stays quiet and clear for watching both the sandy bottom where turtles feed and the reef structure where corals and fish live.

Will I see turtles, or is that not guaranteed?

The first snorkeling zone is specifically a sandy area with seagrass where green and white turtles feed, so the guide takes you there to look for them. The second zone moves to the reef itself, where corals and fish of different sizes and colors are the main draw.

How long do I actually spend in the water snorkeling?

You spend one hour in the water. The full 90-minute outing also includes a 15-minute boat ride each way to and from the reef.

Can my 5-year-old come snorkeling in Costa Maya?

Children are welcome from age 4 and up. The shallow depth and calm water make it manageable for younger swimmers, and the guide works with the group's comfort level.

What snorkeling gear do I need to bring?

Snorkeling equipment is provided as part of the activity, so you don't need to bring your own mask, fins or snorkel. Bring a swimsuit, sunscreen and a towel; bottled water is included.

Is this snorkeling trip suitable if I've never snorkeled before?

Yes—the guide works with both first-time and experienced snorkelers. The shallow, protected water and the guide's presence throughout make it accessible for beginners, and the activity suits all fitness levels.
