The experience

Two and a half hours means two separate snorkeling stops, each lasting about an hour underwater. The first takes you to majestic coral reefs where tropical fish, corals and other shallow-water species move around you. The second moves to the area where sea turtles are often found: the reason most people book this one. You're on the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the second largest in the world, so the marine life density is not a guess.

An aquatic guide is with you throughout, speaking English or Spanish depending on your group. Masks, fins and life jackets are provided for all ages, so you show up with nothing but a swimsuit. The boat carries a GoPro camera operator who shoots photos during the activity. Those come with you at the end. Between the water stops, you get a soft drink or beer, bottled water, and either guacamole or seasonal fruit depending on the day. Beach club access rounds out the package, so you can rinse off and rest after.

Children from age 5 can join. Infants and small children can come along in a pram or stroller. The activity is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, poor cardiovascular health, or pregnancy. You'll need at least a moderate level of physical fitness to manage the swimming and the time in the water. Transportation to the departure point is not included, though public transportation options are available nearby.
