The reef here is the largest in the Northern Hemisphere, and you'll see it at 6 to 12 feet down.

Snorkel the Meso-American Barrier Reef in Costa Maya with a live guide, full equipment and water included; the 90-minute activity departs from Yaya Beach Club, a short cab ride from the cruise port. Children from age 10 can enter the water; younger kids can ride the boat. Guides speak English, Spanish and Italian. Minimum two participants required.

The Experience

You've got a few hours between ship time and departure, and the reef is 10 minutes away by taxi from the port. Exit the cruise terminal, ask a cab driver to take you to Yaya Beach Club—the ride costs about $7 per person round trip—and you'll find Doctor Dive Costa Maya inside the club. Bring your swimsuit, towel and sunscreen; everything else is there: snorkel mask, fins, snorkel tube, water and soft drinks.

The guide takes you out to the Meso-American Barrier Reef, the largest barrier reef in the Northern Hemisphere. You'll snorkel at an average depth of 6 to 12 feet—shallow enough to see the coral and fish clearly, deep enough that the reef opens up around you. The activity runs 90 minutes total, and a guide stays with the group the whole time. If you want to bring your own scuba gear or rent full diving equipment, the shop has tanks and regulators available for $25.

Children as young as 10 can snorkel in the water; kids ages 5 to 9 can come on the boat but stay aboard. Anyone younger than 5 isn't permitted. The minimum group size is two people, so you'll need at least one other person booking to go out. Moderate fitness is expected—you're swimming and managing equipment in moving water—and the activity isn't suitable for anyone with spinal injuries, cardiovascular conditions or pregnancy.
