The experience

The day starts with pickup from your hotel in an air-conditioned vehicle. You arrive at a private beach setup (a small, eco-friendly wooden structure rather than a resort), where kayaks and snorkel gear are ready to use. The open bar and kitchen are staffed throughout, so you can paddle out, come back for lunch, swim again, or sit with a drink and watch the water. There's no schedule to follow. The 3 to 5 hours are yours to split between the water and the beach.

Kayaks and snorkel equipment are complimentary, along with bottled water and coffee. Lunch is a full meal of local food, and the bar serves unlimited drinks (sodas, beer, wine, whatever you want) all day. Free Wi-Fi is available if you need it. A guide speaks English, Spanish or German and can answer questions about the water, the wildlife or the area, but the rhythm of the day is up to you.

The beach itself is small and away from the crowds you'd find at the main resorts along the Riviera Maya.
