The Experience
Someone’s handing me a cold bottle of tamarind soda before I’ve even kicked off my sandals. That’s how the day starts at Xahuayxol — just this tiny group of us (I counted maybe twenty people?) and a stretch of pale sand that feels like it belongs to nobody but the sea. Our driver had pointed out the name on a faded sign, “garden in the sea,” he said, which is what Xahuayxol means in Mayan. I tried repeating it and got a laugh from Ana, who runs the kitchen here. She says most people get tongue-tied on their first try.
The main keyword for me? Quiet. No music blasting or vendors calling out — just wind moving through palms and the soft crunch of shells underfoot. Lunch was ready by noon: grilled fish with lime, tortillas still warm from the pan, and something green that Ana called sikil pak (tasted nutty, kind of addictive). We wandered down to the water after eating, borrowed kayaks right off the sand. The reef is close enough you can see flashes of turquoise where it breaks up the waves. I’m not much of a snorkeler but gave it a go anyway — saw parrotfish nibbling coral and a kid from another family chasing his dad with a starfish.
I didn’t expect to spend so long just lying back in one of those hammocks strung between crooked palms, watching clouds drift over the Caribbean. There’s WiFi if you want it (I mostly ignored it), and someone always seemed to appear when my glass ran low. At some point Ana brought out coffee — strong and sweet — which tasted even better with salt still on my lips. The sun felt different here; softer maybe? Or maybe that was just me finally unwinding after days in busier places.
