The experience

Hands on the handlebars, dust kicking up behind us. That’s how our day started at Canopy River outside Puerto Vallarta. Our guide Luis grinned as he handed me the helmet (I think he could tell I was a bit nervous). The Sierra Madre mountains looked huge and green all around. We followed him along bumpy trails for about an hour, engine rumbling under me, sun warm on my arms. There was this moment when we stopped above El Salto. You could hear water rushing below before you even saw it. I didn’t expect to actually want to jump in, but after peeling off my shoes and feeling that cold water? Couldn’t resist.

After drying off (kind of, my shirt never really did), Luis led us to the zipline platforms. You know that weird mix of excitement and “why am I doing this?” right before you step off? That hit hard when I looked down at the river. But once I pushed off… just wind and trees flashing by, nothing else in my head for those few seconds. The view from up there: honestly, it’s still stuck with me.

We weren’t done yet though. There were these mules waiting for us, smaller than horses but somehow more stubborn? Mine kept stopping to sniff things along the trail while Luis joked about trading rides. It was only about 15 minutes but felt like a good way to slow down after all the adrenaline. Back at the ranch, they set out little glasses for tequila tasting. The smell was sharp and sweet at the same time (I tried to sip politely but… well). Someone asked how to say “cheers” in Spanish and we all sort of fumbled through it together.
