The experience

“Wait, are we really doing this?” That’s what I blurted out as our helmets clicked on in Puerto Vallarta, right before the engines started rumbling. Our guide, Luis, grinned and handed me a bandana, “for the dust,” he said, but honestly it was more for my nerves at first. The streets were still waking up as we rolled out, dogs barking somewhere behind us and the scent of tortillas drifting over the river. I hadn’t expected to feel so awake so quickly.

The climb into the Sierra Madre was bumpier than I’d pictured: rocks under the wheels, a quick splash as we crossed the Rio Cuale (I got soaked, not gonna lie). There’s this moment where you look back and see all of Puerto Vallarta spread below you, Banderas Bay shining through the haze. Luis pointed out some iguanas sunning themselves on a branch. I tried to spot them but mostly just squinted into the green. The air up there is cooler, sharper somehow. We stopped by this waterfall lagoon, only there if it’s rained enough, and I jumped in even though my toes went numb instantly. Totally worth it.

Lunch was at a little mountain restaurant where someone’s abuela was stirring something that smelled like roasted peppers and lime. After eating way too much (and trying to ask for seconds in Spanish, pretty sure I messed that up), we finished with a tequila tasting. Luis explained how real tequila should taste smooth, not burn.
