The Experience

“If you’re nervous, just follow my lead — the mangroves always look wild but they’re friendly,” our guide Luis grinned as he handed me the helmet. I’d barely zipped up my jacket before the sound of engines cut through the thick green air. The ATV felt heavier than I thought, kind of rattly over roots and sand, but honestly, that was half the fun. We zigzagged through shadows and sudden bursts of sunlight — sometimes you catch a whiff of salt even before you see the ocean. There was this moment where a blue butterfly just hovered in front of us for a second. Luis laughed and said it’s good luck if one follows your group (I hope he wasn’t joking).

After about forty-five minutes — which went by way too fast — we rolled out onto these little dunes by the beach. Sand everywhere, stuck in my shoes, but who cares? I could already hear the waves and some reggaeton drifting from the Maroma Beach Club. Then came decision time: speedboat or waverunner? I picked the waverunner because someone told me it’s easier to steer (not sure if that’s true). Our guide switched to Spanish when explaining the controls — “gira despacio!” — and I nodded like I understood more than I did. Honestly, once you’re out there bouncing over turquoise water with spray in your face, language doesn’t matter much.

I didn’t expect how quiet it would feel for a second when we paused near the reef — just wind and distant shouts from other groups. My arms were shaking a bit from holding on so tight (maybe I’m not as brave as I thought), but looking back at Playa Maroma from out on the water… yeah, that’s something that sticks with you. Afterward we got food at the beach club — nothing fancy but salty fries taste better after all that adrenaline. Luis asked if we’d do it again; everyone just grinned and nodded.
