The experience

I almost missed the boat, literally. We got to the marina just as our guide, Luis, was waving everyone over. I’d read “be 30 minutes early” but, well, mornings aren’t my thing. He grinned and said, “No worries, you made it!” The dock smelled like sunscreen and saltwater, and there was this low hum of chatter from other travelers. I could see the Arch of Cabo San Lucas in the distance already: kind of surreal after seeing it in so many photos.

As we pulled away from the pier, pelicans swooped low near the water, flapping so close you could hear their wings slap. Luis pointed out Pelican Rock (fitting), and told us how these birds basically run the place. He even did a pretty good pelican impression that made everyone laugh. The boat slowed by Lover’s Beach. He shared some story about star-crossed lovers meeting there (I didn’t catch all of it because I was distracted by how clear the water looked). You could smell sunscreen and something faintly fishy: probably from the boats bobbing nearby.

The highlight for me was drifting right up to El Arco. It’s bigger than I expected, all jagged edges against that wild blue sky. Everyone took turns with photos: somehow mine came out crooked but maybe that’s more honest anyway. After that, we had the option to hop off at Lover’s Beach. Sand stuck to my feet instantly and I just sat there for a bit listening to waves thump against rock. I still think about that view sometimes when things get noisy back home.
