The experience
The day starts at Semenggoh Rehabilitation Center, where the orangutans spend most of their time roaming the forest reserve but return during scheduled feeding times. You walk the trails to watch them forage for natural food and build nests in the trees. Many have already been released back into the surrounding area. The center is a temporary home for displaced primates rescued from captivity, and the feeding platform is where you're most likely to see them up close.
After Semenggoh, the tour moves to Sarawak Cultural Village, located 24 kilometers from Kuching at the foothills of Mount Santubong. The village spreads across 17 acres and functions as a living museum rather than a static display. You'll be introduced to the unique lifestyles of the seven major ethnic groups that make up Sarawak, with residents demonstrating traditional arts, crafts, games and the food of each community. This is where you see how people actually live and work, not just artifacts behind glass.
Your guide speaks English throughout the day and travels with you in an air-conditioned minivan. Hotel pickup and return transfer are included, along with one water bottle per person. The tour runs eight hours total, so bring extra water, insect repellent, sunscreen, a hat and comfortable walking shoes: the trails at Semenggoh require at least a moderate level of fitness.
