The experience

The village sits 22 miles north of Kuching, tucked into the foothills near Damai Beach. After hotel pickup in the city, you travel by air-conditioned minivan with a driver and English-speaking guide. The route takes you out of the urban center and into the landscape where the village is built as a working museum, not a recreation, but a place where the different architectural traditions and daily practices of Sarawak's tribes are on display for you to observe and study.

You move through six houses on foot, each one built in the style of a different group: the Orang Ulu, Bidayuh, Iban and Melanau peoples, plus Chinese and Malay houses. The guide walks you through the layouts, materials and cultural details of each one, so you see how the design of a house reflects the way a community lives. Bottled water is provided throughout the tour. The whole visit takes four hours from pickup to drop-off.

You choose between a 9:00am or 2:00pm departure when you book, so the timing fits the rest of your day in Kuching. A minimum of two people per booking is required. The tour is wheelchair accessible, and infants can ride in a pram or stroller, though they must sit on an adult's lap during transport.
