Step-by-step itinerary

Cultural Village and Sunset Cruise

  • Visit Sarawak Cultural Village
  • Experience ethnic daily activities
  • Return to hotel for refreshments
  • Depart for Sunset River Cruise
  • Enjoy cruise along Sarawak River
  • View The Astana and Fort Margherita

The experience

You start at 9am at the Sarawak Cultural Village, set at the foothills of Mount Santubong. The village is built around the traditional homes of seven ethnic groups: you walk from one tribe's dwelling to the next, watching residents carry out daily activities. Making crafts, preparing food, playing traditional games. About 150 people live and work there full-time, so what you see is not a staged performance but the actual practice of these skills. The guide walks with you through the village, explaining what each group does and how their lives differ across Sarawak.

After the village, you return to your hotel for light refreshments before the second half of the day. At 5pm you head to the river for the sunset cruise. The boat follows the Sarawak River, the waterway that built Kuching's history and economy. You pass the Astana, the official residence of Sarawak's Governor built in 1870, and Fort Margherita, a colonial fort from 1879. The river itself is what early settlers saw when they sailed upstream to establish the city, so the cruise gives you the perspective they had: the landscape and landmarks as they would have encountered them.

The tour runs six hours total and covers the ground by air-conditioned minivan between the village and the river. A live guide in English is with you throughout. You get one water bottle per person. The operator suggests bringing a hat, comfortable walking shoes, sunscreen and insect repellent, and a camera.

What’s included

  • Return hotel transfer and air-conditioned minivan transport.
  • live English-speaking guide for the full day.

Top questions

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Child (3 to 11 years); Infant (under 3): free.

What do the seven ethnic groups at Sarawak Cultural Village actually do there?

The seven major ethnic groups of Sarawak live and work in the village full-time, demonstrating traditional daily activities: making crafts and traditional items, preparing local foods and delicacies, playing traditional games, and living in their own tribal-style homes. You walk between the homes and watch these activities happen as part of their regular day.

What will I see on the Sarawak River at sunset?

The sunset cruise follows the river through Kuching's historic core. You pass the Astana, the Governor's official residence built in 1870, and Fort Margherita, a colonial fort from 1879. The river itself is the route early settlers took when they sailed upstream to found the city, so the cruise shows you the landscape and landmarks from their perspective.

How much time do I spend at the cultural village versus on the river?

The morning at Sarawak Cultural Village runs from 9am until you return to your hotel for refreshments. The sunset river cruise departs at 5pm. The full tour is six hours, with the village taking up the first portion and the cruise the second half of the day.

Is lunch included, and what about drinks during the tour?

One water bottle per person is included. Food and drinks beyond that are not included in the tour price, though you return to your hotel between the village and the cruise, giving you time to arrange a meal if you need one.

How do I get to the village and back to my hotel?

Hotel pickup and return transfer are included. You travel by air-conditioned minivan with the group, and the guide travels with you throughout the day.
