Step-by-step itinerary
Visit Sarawak Cultural Village
- Drive 30 minutes to Cultural Village
- Explore seven traditional houses
- Meet storytellers and take photos
- Watch 45-minute cultural dance performance
The experience
The village sits on 17 acres and condenses what Sarawak calls "See Sarawak in Half a Day": seven traditional houses, each an exact replica of its culture's original dwellings, built with the same wood, landscaping and carvings as the real thing. You walk at your own pace through homes belonging to the Iban, Bidayuh, Penan, Orang Ulu, Melanau, Malay and Chinese communities. At each house, a storyteller from that community is there to explain their traditions, lifestyle and handcrafts, and they'll pose for photos with you.
The tour includes a 45-minute cultural performance in the village's own theatre: an award-winning show of songs and dances from across Sarawak's ethnic groups. Hotel or port pickup from Kuching is included. If your hotel sits outside the 1-kilometer radius of the city center, an additional USD 40 surcharge applies and is paid on the day. The drive from Kuching takes about 45 minutes each way. You'll have time to try throwing a Malay spinning top, one of the rare hands-on moments the village offers visitors.
An English-speaking driver accompanies you in an air-conditioned vehicle. The site is suitable for all fitness levels, and infants can ride in a pram or stroller. During Chinese New Year, Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Hari Gawai Dayak or Christmas, a 30 percent surcharge applies and must be paid on the day of travel.
