The experience
Sungai Sarawak flows through towering river trees and dense rainforest on the outskirts of Kuching. You paddle in two stretches: a four-kilometer run in the morning, then a six-kilometer stretch after a stopover at Kampung Danu for fish feeding. The kayak is stable enough for all fitness levels, and the pace is leisurely. You're not racing, you're moving through the landscape. A safety briefing happens before you launch at 9am, and a local guide paddles alongside.
Between the two kayaking sections, you stop at the riverbank for a swim in the water, then continue downstream to Kampung Semadang village, where lunch is served. The village sits at the end point of the paddle, so you're not backtracking. After eating, the minivan takes you inland to Semenggoh Nature Reserve for the 3pm orangutan feeding time, when the primates come down from the forest canopy to eat fruit. This is the second half of the day. The reserve is a separate visit, not part of the water.
Hotel pickup starts at 8am from either Kuching City Center or a Kuching Outskirt Resort, depending on which option you book. The driver and guide are both included, and they return you to your hotel after the reserve closes. Bring water-resistant shoes for paddling, a towel, insect repellent and a dry bag for your camera or phone.
