The experience
Semenggoh Wildlife Centre sits 24km outside Kuching and operates as both a rehabilitation programme for orphaned and rescued orangutans and a research station for studying their biology and behaviour. The centre's success is visible in its population: over 20 orangutans now live semi-wild in the forest, and many were born in the wild to mothers who themselves went through rehabilitation. The tour begins with a walk through untouched rainforest before you reach the feeding platform, where the orangutans come down from the trees for their meal. You'll see them at different life stages (tiny infants, boisterous adolescents and dignified mature adults) all moving freely within their secure natural habitat.
The 30-minute drive from your hotel takes you through the landscape surrounding Kuching to reach the centre. A guide accompanies you throughout, and the tour lasts around three hours total. Feeding sessions happen at set times: approximately 9:00–9:30am or 3:00–3:30pm, and you select which one suits your day when you book. Wear comfortable walking shoes for the rainforest section, and bring or wear sun protection. The centre receives a USD10 contribution from your booking to support its animal care work.
During the wild forest fruit season (November to March), orangutans may not return to the feeding platform because natural food is abundant in the forest. Check with the tour operator before booking if you're travelling during those months. Children of all ages can join: infants ride free and can travel in a pram or stroller, though they'll need to sit on an adult's lap during the minivan ride. The tour suits all fitness levels, though the rainforest walk involves uneven ground.
