The experience
Pickup happens between 7:30 and 8:00 AM from your Kuching hotel, then a 35–40 minute drive takes you to Bako Carpark and Terminal. Along the way you'll see mangrove forests, dramatic coastal cliffs and rock formations, with chances to spot crocodiles, sea eagles and shore birds from the vehicle. Your guide meets you at the terminal, handles registration, and from there the group moves into the park itself.
The guided jungle walk starts around 9:00 to 9:30 AM and is where the wildlife emerges. Proboscis monkeys, the park's signature draw, move through the canopy, and you'll also encounter long-tailed macaques, silver leaf monkeys and bearded wild boars on the trails. The guide searches for the green pit viper, a venomous snake that hides in vegetation, and points out flying squirrels, colugos, otters, tarsiers and slow lorises if they appear. Bird enthusiasts see both migratory and resident species throughout the walk. By mid-afternoon the group returns to park headquarters, then heads back to the carpark for the drive to Kuching, arriving at your hotel in the afternoon.
The tour includes bottled water, entrance fees, an air-conditioned vehicle and a guide who speaks English. Lunch is available at the Bako Canteen if you choose to add it at checkout. A moderate level of physical fitness is needed for the rainforest trails, and the day runs roughly 6.5 hours from pickup to hotel drop-off.
