The Experience

The morning starts with pickup from Kuching and a half-hour drive to the fishing village of Bako, where you board a boat to Bako National Park headquarters. The park sits on a coastline carved by millions of years of erosion into cliff faces, sandstone structures and sea stacks that frame the entry. At 16 square kilometers, it is the oldest gazette national park in Sarawak and holds seven distinct forest types within its borders: beach vegetation, cliff vegetation, mangrove, peat swamp forests, mixed dipterocarp forest, heath forest and grasslands. Each one supports different wildlife.

The trek itself moves through these zones with your guide, who navigates the trails and points out the animals that live here. Long-tailed macaques roam openly across the park; their shier cousins, the silver leaf monkeys, move through the canopy. Proboscis monkeys—the long-nosed, potbellied ones—inhabit specific forest types. You may also spot flying lemur, mouse deer, bearded pigs, tarsiers, slow loris and palm civet cats, though sightings depend on the day and the hour. The geological landmarks—the cliffs, the stacks, the beaches—are constant. After the jungle, the sandy beaches offer a place to rest before the return journey to Kuching.
