The experience
You arrive at a family home 20 minutes from central Kuala Lumpur and start with flower tea before walking through an organic garden planted with over 50 herbs, spices and edible flowers: turmeric, curry leaves, and plants you'll use within the hour. You see, touch, smell and taste them as your guide explains how they work in everyday cooking. This is not a tour of someone else's meal. It is the setup for what you are about to make.
Then you move into the kitchen (a real Malaysian one, not a teaching kitchen), and cook five dishes of your choice, hands-on, from scratch. Your instructor is Sara Khong, a professional cook and author of four Malaysian cookbooks who teaches in English. The class stays at six people maximum, so you get direct attention and space to work. You learn the techniques, the timing, the balance of flavors that make Malaysian street food work. At the end, you receive a recipe booklet so the dishes travel home with you.
Lunch is what you cooked. You eat together with the family, talking about Malaysian food, culture and daily life over the meal you made. It is the only cooking class that ends this way.
